Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between translation and localization?

Translation is the process of converting text from a source language to a target language. However, a professional translator will not translate word-by-word, but rather transfer the meaning of each sentence into something a native of the target language would understand.

Localization (also referred to by the numeronym L10n) is the process of both translating and adapting the original contents to the linguistic and cultural systems of the target-language markets or to a specific country or region. Usually, localization is what you need when you have to make your website or software products available and usable by users from other countries.

What is Machine Translation (or MT)?

Machine translation, sometimes referred to by the abbreviation MT (not to be confused with TM or Translation Memory) is a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of software to translate text or speech from one natural language to another.
On a basic level, MT performs simple substitution of words in one natural language for words in another, but that alone usually cannot produce a good translation of a text because recognition of whole phrases and their closest counterparts in the target language is needed.

What is a TM (Translation Memory) and what does CAT mean?

A translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”. Individual words are handled by terminology bases and are not within the domain of TM.

Translation memories are typically used in conjunction with a dedicated computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool, such as specific software programs that use translation memories, word processors, terminology management systems, multilingual dictionary, or even raw machine translation output.

Most companies producing multilingual documentation are using translation memory systems.

Is Lexikón using CAT tools and TM systems?

Yes, Lexikón, like most translation companies around the world, is also using CAT tools and TM systems.
These tools serve a double purpose: they facilitate the translator's work and at the same time allow the customer to save on the translation costs. In fact, they provide a valid support to translators, allowing them to reuse existing translations and, on the other hand, they offer the customer a great opportunity to save money considering that, where there is leverage from and existing translation memory, the translator's task is much easier and requires considerably less effort than a translation from scratch.

On average, how long does it take to complete a translation?

There are a few things to consider here. On average, an experienced translator can translate around 2,000 words per day (i.e. about 8 pages of content). However, this will vary depending upon the difficulty level of the original material. In addition, first time translations will usually take longer because they cannot take advantage of CAT tools and Translation Memories to speed up the process. Other parameters to consider are: subject matter, file format, quality of the source text, etc.

Which document format do you support?

We work with documents in electronic format as well as hardcopy format. Although we support most document formats, standard formats allow us to speed up the process.

As far as hardcopy documents are concerned, text should be clearly readable in order to keep prices as low as possible. Please fax us or e-mail us the scanned copy for quote.

How do you count the words in a document and how much does a translation cost?

We normally use word count tools specifically tailored for the translation industry. These are mainly useful in the case of document formats which include text but also tags (non translatable text), such as HTML, PHP, ASP, etc. As for the prices, they vary based on different parameters, such as language pairs, level of difficulty, subject matter, service required, etc.

How can I pay and in what currency?

The preferred method of payment is by wire transfer. The currency is generally the euro (EUR), but we also accept payments in U.S. dollars (USD), British pounds (GBP).

How can I send/receive the files or documents to translate?

We normally send/receive files as email attachments or via our FTP server. The choice mainly depends on the file size and the customer's preference. For paper documents, we usually receive them by fax or, if this is not available, a courier.

Who do you provide your services to?

Most of our customers are small to large businesses and translation agencies. In general, anyone who needs quality and professional translations can request our services.

Why shoud I use Lexikón translation services instead of a freelance translator?

Our services offer many advantages compared to working directly with freelancers:

  • All of our translators pass a quality certification and verification process.
  • We check the translation quality after each and every project - so we only have high quality translators.
  • You will have one point of contact for all your needs - no need to chase after translators in order to find one available for your translation project. No need to look for a second linguist to get that translation reviewed. We will take care of it all for you, always.
  • Our Project Manager will make sure the project runs as smoothly as possible and will ensure high quality throughout the process at not additional charge.
  • We guarantee your satisfaction - if you are not happy with our work quality, we will make all necessary corrections you might require to improve quality at no extra cost for you.
  • Our translators have a long term commitment with us, not just for a single project, therefore they have a higher motivation to do a good job.
  • You don't have to wait for your translation to get started – we will have a linguist ready to get working on your project right away, no need to wait.
  • You can require a T+E (Translation & Editing) service, where a second linguist (an expert translator) will completely review the translation of the first linguist.
  • Our prices are very competitive. Ask for a quote and see how affordable quality, professional translations can be!

What languages do you support?

Currently, we offer translation services in all major European languages. Please be aware that our goal is specialization. So we do not provide translation services in any languages, as this would make it impossible for us to guarantee a high quality standard. For a complete list of supported languages please see the languages page.

Will you keep my documents confidential?

All documents submitted for translation are viewed only by translators and the other linguists involved in the specific translation process. All of our linguists and project managers are bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Is there a special discounted rate for large projects?

Yes, we are willing to offer a percent discount for larger projects - usually over 20,000 words. We also can offer a percent discount for high monthly volumes. Please contact us for details.

How do you select your translators and editors?

First, we only use translators/editors who are native speakers of the target language. They must be professional translators (i.e. they do this job for a living) and have at least 5 years of experience in the translation business.

Our translators are all highly qualified and certified by an international industry association. Also, they are continuously evaluated based on both our QA process and the feedback we receive from our clients, so that all linguists meet our quality requirements.

All our approved linguists must be:

  • Native speakers of the target language
  • Subject-matter experts in their working field
  • Familiar with industry-standard tools
  • Committed to continuous improvement
  • Responsible, professional and accurate

New translators will undergo a field-training period of one year, during which their performance and improvements are continuously monitored. At the end of this period, if they prove to meet all the requirements, they become approved members of our team.

What kind of Quality Control procedures do you have in place?

Over the years, we have developed procedures, guidelines and checklists for our project management in order to ensure high quality results, meet client requirements and obtain their satisfaction. See QUALITY section for details.
